![]() Quick Setup UpĪs mentioned briefly earlier, we are using an AWS Splunk AMI on the AWS free tier to get us going with a clean and fully functional Splunk install. Later we will also look at using Tines for a more holistic workflow automation approach. ToolingĬURL on the CLI is the fastest way to get going, albeit you could just as easily use Postman, PowerShell, or another scripting tool (or language) of your choice. Additional Splunk restrictions and limitations with the API are listed here. This will save you time and enable you to explore the API faster. It only exposes the “Search” endpoint, that is, if you can get it enabled on your instance by manually calling support! We recommend not being put off by the term “enterprise” in Splunk Enterprise and proceeding with the AWS AMI (or doing a full install yourself on your host). Splunk Cloud is extremely limited in terms of endpoint availability. In this guide, we will be defaulting to simple Basic HTTP authentication. Splunk API Authenticationīasic HTTP authentication (RFC 2617), session-based, and token authentication (Splunk v7.3+) types are available. The REST API is exposed on TCP port 8089 and responds with XML unless you ask for another output mode in the query or action. However, specific types of endpoints are grouped into resource groups, of which “search” is one. ![]() Splunk community forum here / developer site here.ĭepending on your type of install, be it Splunk Cloud or Splunk Enterprise, your host (FQDN) will be different. Splunkbase (application marketplace) here. REST API (Search) here (Search Tutorial/Tips here). REST API user manual here / reference manual here. Main Splunk documentation hub here ( Splunk Enterprise manual here). What tooling can I use to quickly prototype and test? Where and what sort of documentation does the API have?Īre there any limitations (including rate-limits), or ‘ gotchas’ ? When diving into an API, the first concerns tend to be: Splunk can get very complicated very quickly if you do larger deployments or run clusters, so we’re just running a single forwarder (Windows host + event logs) and a single receiver (our Splunk Enterprise host). We recommend you do, too, if you want to explore the API functionality quickly and conveniently, though all commercial or enterprise versions should have the API enabled.īefore we dive into the API, some basic nomenclature and concepts should be understood around Splunk, mainly that of forwarders and receivers. Its APIs are rich, mature, and first-class! The Splunk Cloud trial has some API limitations and restrictions, so we’ll use Splunk Enterprise running on an Amazon AWS AMI instance. Splunk even has its own Search Processing Language (SPL) and multiple training and certification tracks. It is a rich and versatile platform that, once fed with multiple data sources, can help you surface and identify valuable insights and trigger actions. There are many reasons to automate Splunk's operations. We will then turn our learnings into a fully-fledged self-service internal tool for use by colleagues (or perhaps other teams in your organization). ![]() We will explore and then automate search operations for a simple threat-hunting example. Here, we look specifically at Splunk Enterprise, the original and still much-loved core. Splunk is a powerful data ingestion, manipulation, and analytics platform that has grown over the years to form a whole suite of products.

(Whew! When I first read this it was on microfilm at the AAA, and I could not believe my eyes. Aline wrote in a birthday letter to her future husband: The General Motors job was all and more than anyone had written about it: A shining aluminum dome covered the circular space in which Styling tested and displayed GM cars a shining 50-foot stainless steel water tower marked GM’s place in the sky above the flat suburban landscape. The long sides of the three-story buildings housing Engineering and Research, Service, Process Development and Styling were greenish glass curtain walls, still something new the short walls were bright glazed brick, yellow, orange, two reds, two blues, olive, gray and black. According to the article, the gem can be found along the east side of the Rocky Mountains, but this is the only economically productive area of gem-quality Ammolite in the world. The iridescent phenomenon in Ammolite arises from the interference of light bouncing off stacked layers of thin microscopic platelets that make up the replaced aragonite in the ammonite shell. Unlike the vast majority of ammonite deposits found around the world, the specimens found at Korite’s mine site have a fossilized outer shell that’s iridescent as a result of replacement by aragonite. He documented the experience, which included a visit to the mine site, in his June 2013 Rock & Gem article, “Ammolite: An Organic Jewel.” The article offers a thorough overview of Korite’s operation and how these fragile shells are mined, an excavation process that often occurs at depths of 50 to 60 feet. While the ammonite deposit was first recorded in 1908 by a National Geographic survey, local lapidaries of Calgary only started fashioning Ammolite in 1962-which is hard to believe since lapidaries are always looking for new and unique materials to cut.Īuthor Stuart Wilson was recently given a tour of Korite International by company president Pierre Pare. The company is located in Calgary, Canada, and mines for ammonite near Lethbridge, in the province of Alberta. Korite International Ltd., which began as Korite Gems in 1977, is the primary company mining, fashioning, and marketing the world’s Ammolite. “Ammolite” is the trade name referring to gems cut from fossilized ammonite, an extinct group of marine invertebrate, also collected as whole specimens. Other sites give rules of thumb in terms of the height or the width of the screen, telling you to sit no closer than two times the width and no farther than five times the width, for example, though five times is a little far for my taste. Either approach-multiplication or division-will give you left and right viewing angles for the image of roughly 30 to 40 degrees, which is the usual recommended range. Beyond that, if you search the Web, you'll turn up several competing rules of thumb for the ideal seating distance for any given screen size.Īmong the most common suggestions are to multiply the diagonal measurement of the screen by 1.6, 1.5, or 1.2 times to get the best seating distance, or divide the diagonal measurement by 0.6 or 0.84. Indeed, ProjectorCentral's Paul Vail discussed the issue in a Q&A column answering the question, " How Do I Calculate Screen Size and Seating Distance for My Home Theater?". ![]() If not, you'll probably find it helpful to at least touch on those two steps first.ĭeciding on screen size is worth an article of its own. If you already know the screen size and image brightness you want, you can skip to the section on calculating lumens. When it comes to calculating the lumens you need, you can replace most of the arithmetic with a simple look-up table, which you'll find at the end of this article.Ĭalculating your lumen needs for a particular screen size and lighting doesn't have to be so hard. ![]() There's not much you can do about most of these complications, but in this article I'll address one in particular. Then there's the math part of it to negotiate. Unfortunately, it's not so simple in practice, with all sorts of ifs, ands, and buts to account for. Start with the screen size and the image brightness you need, and then calculate how many lumens it will take to give you that desired image brightness. How bright a projector you need to light up a screen-whether in a dark room with controlled lighting or in a family room or conference room with window light that changes throughout the day-is easy to determine, in principle at least. ![]() Since then, it has evolved to exclude causes of disease and takes into account the serum sodium level and whether the patient is on dialysis. The original MELD score calculation used the patient's bilirubin level, creatinine level, INR, and cause of liver disease. The MELD score, which has a broader range of more continuous variable values, was created to account for these differences. Practically speaking, a patient with an INR of 6 and bilirubin of 14 could potentially have the same Child-Pugh score as a patient with an INR of 2.3 and bilirubin of 4.0. This last limitation was significant because patients were not able to be adequately differentiated based on the severity of the disease, and therefore wait time had a considerable impact on prioritization. Laboratory values less than 1.0 are set to 1.0 for the purposes of the MELD score calculation. Multiply the score by 10 and round to the nearest whole number. The Model for End-Stage Liver Disease (MELD) is a prognostic score to measure the severity of liver failure and thus to estimate short term. The original MELD score is calculated using the following formula: MELD Score 0.957 x Log (creatinine mg/dL) + 0.378 x Log (bilirubin mg/dL) + 1.120 x Log (INR) + 0.6431. However, there were three primary limitations to its use: 1) grading ascites and encephalopathy require a subjective assessment, 2) the classification system does not account for renal function, and 3) there are only ten different scores (based on points) available.
